About the Show

A Soldier's Play is a murder mystery drama by American playwright, Charles Fuller. If follows Captain Richard Davenport as he investigates the murder of a Sergeant of an all-black Army unit during WWII. As his investigation progresses, he learns about the soldiers' relationships with one another, the Sergeant, and their society. I was the props designer for Oklahoma City University's production of this show directed by Brandon Burton. I oversaw the artistic direction, budgeting, and acquisition of all the props and furnishings. I personally handled everything relating to the firearms in this show.

Designing the Props

This show is very much a historical fiction. In order for the story to have maximum impact, the director knew that everything would need to be as historically accurate as possible. So, I strove for realism with the prop design and got creative with the specific look and feel of them to further illustrate the various character's personalities and ranks. My favorite prop was Captain Davenport's briefcase. Davenport is a very meticulous man, so I knew his case would need to be highly organized. Everything inside has it's proper place. I turned the inside lid into a classic crime show "murder board" to show his dedication to the investigation and be a visual representation of him trying to make sense of the many confusing and overlapping incidents surrounding the crime.
